The last week end I visited the exposition “No Seconds, Comfort Food” of the photographer and ex model Henry Hargreaves on the island of San Servolo, located in the Venetian lagoon between Venice and the Lido. I was astonished when I realized how beautiful the island is actually.
San Servolo has a lovely park, a monastery, a church from the 18th century and the museo della follia (museum of mental illness), as the island housed till 1978, after closing the monastery, all those suffering from mental illness.
I also discovered that it’s even possible to rent a BBQ area (with view over the Lido) and that, obviously, San Servolo is in great demand for weddings, workshops and other events as there’s even the possibility of staying overnight. Actually it’s also the last island in the possession of the city of Venice.
The vaporetto nr 20 stops right in front of the museo della follia and leaves at San Marco San Zaccaria (every 40 minutes). It takes about 10 minutes to reach San Servolo.
