After the invention of the mechanical movable type printing by the German Gutenberg, Venice got soon an important center of book printing.
One of the most important and famous typographers
in Venice was Aldo Manuzio, born in 1449/52 in Bassiano (Lazio), who invented the italic type and commissioned his colleague Francesco Griffo (Bologna) with its design.
Paperback
Manuzios fame is not only due to this invention, but also to the fact that he was the first typographer to use the paperback format 1/8, normally used for religious text only, to print “mundane” literature: the first literature work printed in paperback was the Canzoniere of Petrarca.
You find Manuzios home at the street number 2311 near the Campo San Agostin.
