By bike to Venice

Venice is a city where you can move around by foot or by taking one of waterbusses along the canals.

Bikes are not allowed in the historic city centre.

„So why are you writing a blog article about how to reach Venice by bike?”, you might ask.

Well, because you can actually cross the bridge „Ponte della Libertà“ that connects Venice with the mainland with your bike, but in Piazzale Roma you will have to search for a „parking“ for your bike as you are not allowed to proceed further.

As the bike path from the mainland to Venice on the Ponte della Libertà is finally finished, you can now cross the 6km long bridge crossing through the lagoon to reach Venice in safety, without being run over by cars, busses or taxis.

You would prefer a safe place for your bike without tying it just to one of the lamp posts (well, you are actually not allowed to do so)?

Then I have good news for you: AVM SPA has opened a BiciPark in Piazzale Roma. A real luxury garage for your bike, that is not only a disdainful bicycle rack, but a locked high security box, a “vault” for your bike. Some of these boxes even have plugs to recharge your Ebikes and there is even a little service centre where you can pump up the tires, etc.

Doesn’t this sound marvelous?

The BiciPark (bike parking) is open 24 hours and 7 days a week and has more then 100 boxes that can even be prebooked online.

Click here to book your bike parking http://bicipark.avmspa.it/sito/

The box costs 10€/day. You can find more information and a map with indications how to reach the BiciPark right here. http://avm.avmspa.it/en/content/bicipark-venezia

There is also a bike parking with more than 800 bike racks in Mestre, on the mainland, that costs only 0,50€ per day. The price is much lower as you have less services included: First of all the BiciPark in Mestre is only open from 06 am -11pm (closed on Sundays) and has no high security bike boxes and no charging possibilities. Here you can find more information (in Italian only) http://avm.avmspa.it/it/content/bicipark-mestre

So how can you find the bike paths to reach Venice?

Don’t worry, AVM (managing the BiciPark) and the city of Venice have created different maps indicating the bike paths, for instance here http://avm.avmspa.it/en/content/servizi-di-mobilita-venezia-Bicicletta and here https://www.comune.venezia.it/sites/comune.venezia.it/files/documenti/Ciclabili/BICI-MAP_VE2019.jpg

In case you are not able to open the second link that redirects you directly tot he map, the try this one (then just click on „Mappa e informazioni sulla rete esistente e in progetto“) https://www.comune.venezia.it/it/content/piste-ciclabili

You are not allowed to enter the historic city centre with your bike, but you can reach Lido island with your bike.

To do so, you just have to take one of the ferry boats from Tronchetto to Lido Island (€1 for the bike + the waterbusticket for you) and from there you can drive via Pellestrina to Chioggia, or in the other direction to Cavallino and Jesolo (using other ferry boats).

Nr 17 Tronchetto – Lido – Tronchetto

Nr 11 Alberoni (Lido) – Santa Maria del Mare (Pellestrina) – Alberoni (Lido)
