We are in the 16th century – the era of plagues, the Council of Trent, the Theses of Martin Luther and the biggest seabattle in history of Christianity – when Venice became the metropolis of the courtesans.

Discover the maze-like streets in San Polo district starting from Campo San Polo. From here you will walk to the areas of the former red light district and reach Rialto Bridge. You will cross the bridge entering Saint Mark’s district and discovering the area of San Giovanni Grisostomo and the Church of San Giuliano before reaching Saint Mark’s Square.

The courtesans were more than just the sex toys of the Venetian elite and European sovereigns. They were cultivated, intelligent “dames” that influenced significantly the art and culture of the 16th century.

But not all that glitters is gold. Beauty, fame and wealth had their price. Veronica Franco, one of the most famous courtesans, knew the price well enough.

We are following the tracks of the ladies of easy virtue and the beautiful sophisticated Veronica Franco.
